Pharmacists are the experts in the field of medication. Before qualifying, pharmacy students spend four years at university studying medication and the action of drugs on the body and a further year working in practice under supervision, usually dealing with patients and their medication every single day. This is far more than any other healthcare professional which is why it makes sense to come to us if you have a medication related query.
So, if you want to know whether something your taking from the doctor may be causing some side-effects or if it’s safe to take an over the counter remedy with your prescribed medication or even check the dose of a paracetamol for your child when they have a fever and you’re bleary eyed and up at 3 o’clock in the morning, we can help.
What can we do?
As experts in medication, pharmacists are the first port of call to answer a whole range of medication related queries from healthcare professionals and the general public alike. We usually know the answers immediately, but if we don’t, we can find them out quickly and get back to you. More importantly, pharmacists have sufficient medical knowledge to know when to refer you to another professional for expert help if your condition or problem demands it.

Here are just some of the topics on which pharmacists regularly get asked for advice;
• Unwanted side-effects
• Medicines for children – particularly avoiding colourants or additives which can cause behavioural problems
• Alternative products over the counter or on prescription which won’t cause drowsiness or constipation or a whole range of other problems
• Is my medication addictive?
• Dose checking
• Interactions between medicines
• Questions about long term medicines and monitoring for chronic illnesses
• Tablet identification
• Recommendations for minor illnesses
• Referral for more serious issues
